Fallacy Watch Colby Cosh and Julian Sanchez nicely dismiss the strange contention (recently bruited about in the blogosphere by some otherwise intelligent people) that atheism is a mere "belief," as arbitrary as, and with no more claim to epistemological validity than, theism. 01:40 PM | Home Again I'm back from the conference and a few days in San Diego, all refreshed (if somewhat jet-lagged still) and intellectually stimulated. Lots of good stuff at the conference. Some highlights were a course on Aristotle's ethics by Greg Salmieri, Mary Ann Sures' lectures on sculpture (how did I not know about Houdon before?), and Dr. Peikoff's lectures on induction. In San Diego I got a front row center seat at an outdoor production of Julius Caesar, which even the forced "Ashcroft's Rome" theme and modern dress couldn't make less than excellent. (Already the newbiquity phenomenon is kicking in with regard to all my new knowledge: An NYT article discusses the controversial cleaning of Michelangelo's David. And here's an interesting post and ongoing discussion applying Aristotle's ethics to the topic of gay marriage. I don't agree fully with either side in the debate, but it's a very civil and fascinating one.) Even though I'm back home, I still don't expect to be posting much for the foreseeable future. First I have an online course to finish by September that I'm way behind on. Then I start classes at U of T, where I'll quickly discover if I'm being too ambitious in taking two courses while working a full-time job. So, while this place is not updated regularly at the best of times, it's likely to get even worse. 11:49 AM | |
