Reporting Only Opinion When the Facts Are Clear All the stories about the "controversy" over the capture of Abu Abbas quote the Palestinian Authority as saying the Oslo Accord forbids the prosecution of PLO members for acts committed prior to September 1993. I found only one that even mentioned the US's response to this charge: [T]he United States... said that deal concerned arrangements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. But the biggest omission I note is reporting on the facts. What does the accord say? It's not as if the question is a hard one to answer. Five minutes with Google gave it to me. The accord, which is an agreement between Israel and the PLO, and which was merely witnessed by the US says: Palestinians from abroad whose entry into the West Bank and the Gaza Strip is approved pursuant to this Agreement, and to whom the provisions of this Article are applicable, will not be prosecuted for offenses committed prior to September 13, 1993.Sounds quite straightforward to me. So, are journalists just very poor researchers, or are they so philosophically corrupt that they think the facts are irrelevant? 01:35 PM | At Whose Expense? San Francisco lawyer Kirk Boyd wants to enshrine our "rights" to "free or low-cost health care, shelter, education" and much, much more! Luckily, the organization through which he has chosen to implement his ideas is the UN. 04:04 PM | It Was the Best of Times... Don't miss this photo essay at Balloon Juice. (Via InstaPundit.) 05:50 PM | A New Beginning for Iraq It's a bit early for victory declarations, but the the scenes coming out of Baghdad are definitely cause for a big grin and a happy-dance around the TV. As Andrew Sullivan says, "Celebrate it. Don't let the whiners take this away from you or from the people of Iraq." (But Tim Blair notes some people are rather depressed right now.) 02:18 PM | America Versus Americans Leonard Peikoff's Ford Hall Forum lecture, America Versus Americans, is available online. 02:07 PM | Rally Report This will be brief as I was up at 6AM this morning in order to hand out rally leaflets at Union Station before work and I have a race early tomorrow AM. The pictures tell most of the story anyway. It went well, despite the snow storm and freezing rain. I estimate, completely unscientifically, that a couple of thousand people were there but reports vary above and below this. Regardless, it was a pretty impressive turnout considering the weather. Lots of big-name speakers: Premier Ernie Eves, Reform Party leader Stephen Harper, and even a couple of Liberal MPs. The latter were booed mercilessly. My favorite speaker was Scott Brison, a PC Party leadership candidate. Very principled support of the US for the right reasons and a very skillful orator. Anyway, here are a couple of press reports and you can click on the montage to see all the pictures I took. Update: Kathy Shaidle has her own rally report and David Janes (whose permalinks are busted at the moment) finds bias at the CBC (gasp!) in covering the event. Update II: Scott Brison's speech is online. But I'm pretty sure he didn't say most of this at the rally. Or maybe I zoned out for part of it. Anyway, the good stuff I recall is in the 2nd half. Update III: I made the news! See the first video, "Pro-U.S. demonstrators rally in downtown Toronto," on this page at CTV. That's me waving my flags for about 5s starting at approximately the 13-second mark.
08:17 PM | Rallying Call Toronto readers: Don't let a little snow keep you from coming out at noon to City Hall for the Rally for America. All you other Canadian readers: Please go sign the petition supporting America. 09:25 AM | |
